Carol Smith, Credentialing Specialist, named the July 2024 NES Employee Spotlight

Congratulations to Carol Smith for being named as the July 2024 NES Employee Spotlight!  Carol serves as a Credentialing Specialist at NES Health.

Here’s a bit about Carol in her own words:

Tell us A little bit about yourself?

“I was born and raised in Norfolk, VA.  I’m married to my high school sweetheart, Steven, and 34 years later, we have 3 children and our first grandbaby is on her way.  I received my bachelor’s in business administration from Norfolk State University.  My first job was in the Nurse Audit department at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where files were audited for billing discrepancies.  After leaving Norfolk General, I started a career in Property and Casualty Insurance.  I was an insurance agent with USAA, a claims adjuster with Geico and opened my own insurance agency.  I also worked in property management at my husband’s real estate company.  After 20 years, I left that stressful life behind and began working at NES.  I’m a huge boxing and football fan (Go Steelers!).  Now that we are empty nesters, I enjoy shopping, traveling, and trying new restaurants.  Anyone who knows me knows that I no problem travel for food!  I’m quick to travel to New Orleans for beignets or chargrilled oysters.  There is a whole world out there, and I plan to see as much of it as I can before my time is up.”

What do you do for the company?

“I am a credentialer on Team Emerald.  I work closely with our providers and the Medical Staff Offices to ensure our providers receive their privileges in a timely manner to meet staffing needs..  I also work with them to ensure their files are up to date and assist the MSO with the reappointment of privileges.”

What makes you want to stay at our organization?

“I enjoy what I do and the people I work with.  Every job has some form of stress, but my stress levels here at NES are nowhere near the work environment I come from.  Everyone has an important role and we all come together for a common goal.”

Which work benefit or perk is your favorite and why?

“Working remotely is the biggest benefit. Even though I miss seeing Cindy Morgan every day, I don’t miss my 45 minute commute each way.  It also allowed me to transition moving from VA to SC during the pandemic, and not have to find other employment.  Even though I’m now working from home, NES has still provided me the tools to do my job efficiently.”

Tell us a few things about the favorite part of your job?

“No file is the same.  I love the challenge of getting someone through quickly to ensure our facilities are fully staffed and the needs are met for the communities we serve.  Sometimes, I joke and say I’m the miracle worker when a file gets completed and a provider privileged in under a week.  Of course, that only happens with a cooperative provider and an even more cooperative MSO.”

What skill do you think everyone should learn?

“Playing an instrument.  It’s very relaxing, and it keeps your motor skills active…Your mind with reading music and your fingers/legs/arms with playing the instrument.  I’ve recently started playing my violin again, and it’s a great way for me to wrap up my day.”

Thank you for being part of our team, Carol!
